Which Technical Parameters Help Evaluate Fiber Shedding?

There is no single parameter that can determine whether an artificial turf product will shed fibers excessively. Several properties should be evaluated together.

ParameterWhat it tells youRelevance to fiber loss
Yarn DtexApproximate linear mass of the yarnHigher Dtex can indicate a more substantial yarn, but does not automatically mean better durability
Fiber constructionMonofilament, fibrillated, textured, reinforced, etc.Influences abrasion, recovery and fiber behavior
Tuft densityNumber of stitches/tufts per unit areaAffects surface structure and load distribution
Tuft bind / pull-out resistanceHow securely yarn is retained in the backingImportant for evaluating whole-tuft pull-out
Backing/adhesive performanceIntegrity of the secondary backing systemHelps determine long-term yarn retention
UV/weathering resistanceResistance to environmental agingPoor aging resistance can increase fiber brittleness
Abrasion resistanceResistance to repeated mechanical wearUseful for comparing products intended for intensive use

A particularly important point is that these parameters should not be interpreted independently.

For example, a high-Dtex yarn does not compensate for inadequate tuft anchoring. Conversely, strong backing adhesion cannot prevent a poorly formulated yarn from becoming brittle after prolonged UV exposure.
