What Is Artificial Turf Tuft Bind Strength and Why Is It Important for Non-Infill Artificial Turf?

Tuft bind strength, also called single tuft pull-out force, is one of the most important durability indicators for non-infill artificial turf. It measures the amount of force required to pull a complete tuft of synthetic grass fibers out from the backing system.

For non-infill artificial turf, tuft bind strength is especially important because the system does not rely on silica sand or rubber infill to stabilize the fibers. Instead, the turf performance depends on the combination of tufting technology, backing structure, adhesive or fusion bonding technology, and fiber engineering.

A turf system with insufficient tuft bind strength may experience fiber loss, thinning areas, or surface damage after years of intensive use. However, higher pull-out force alone does not automatically mean better turf quality. The best systems achieve a balance between fiber anchoring strength, drainage performance, elasticity, and long-term durability.
